Django 1.0 alpha 2 released!

In accordance with the Django 1.0 release roadmap, tonight we've released the second "alpha" testing version of Django 1.0.

To grab a copy of 1.0 alpha 2, head over to the Django downloads page, and be sure to read the release notes. Please keep in mind, though, that this release is not meant for production use, and is intended primarily for developers who are interested in checking out the new features in 1.0 and helping to identify and resolve bugs prior to the final release. The 1.0 alpha releases will not receive long-term support and will not be updated with security fixes, since their main purpose is to serve as a stepping-stone on the path to the final Django 1.0 release.

The next step on that path will be the Django 1.0 beta release, currently scheduled for August 14. If you'd like to help out, please review our documentation for contributors and feel free to join in one of the development sprints scheduled for the run up to 1.0; the full schedule is available in the Django 1.0 release roadmap.

Congrats everybody, especially to Marty for FS-RF and to Justin, Jeremy, Brett and Travis for GIS! Things are getting more exciting by the second!

Way to go everyone!

I personally just found out that the new Filefield refactor would help my current project. Thanks!

These are exciting time, and I know everyone appreciates the amount of time and effort everyone is putting in.

It's great to see Django is heading to 1.0!! We're using the trunk version at work and sometimes some bits in our project break but it's not a big deal to fix our codebase since we know we're getting 1.0 ready!

Congrats and keep rocking!!

Very nice!

Congrats guys! Overall I'm very happy with Django. I do wonder about the decision to overhaul the Admin interface so close to an official 1.0 release though.

I see the benefits of doing so - separating out the admin functionality into admin.py so that it doesn't clutter up the models. But, every single Django book and tutorial out there assumes the old-style Admin interfaces. I assume the 1.0 release will attract a lot of new users, and they'll be using the existing materials to learn Django. Newforms Admin is just going to frustrate them.

Mike August 11, 2008 at 4:56 p.m.

Just wanted to clarify: I really do like the newforms-admin features. My main gripe is that they are appearing in the trunk very close to the 1.0 release. Would've been nicer to have them show up earlier.

I've only recently started using django for my projects and I am beyond impressed -- I'm obsessed. Phenomenal work, guys.

Aaron August 13, 2008 at 1:49 p.m.

@Mike
Naw, I'd rather see all the re-factorings hammered out for a 1.0 release, rather than be left with cruft. The online documentation is the defacto standard, and very good at that.

Way to go guys! This is really something.
